The Headies Awards, Nigeria’s premier music recognition event, is back in full swing for its 17th edition kicking off with a spectacular pre-event dinner hosted by the United States Consulate on April 3, 2025. This prestigious gathering took place at the residence of the Consul General, serving as a vibrant precursor to the much-anticipated ceremony set for April 27, 2025.
The dinner brought together a mix of Nigerian stakeholders, including Lagos State Commissioner of Tourism, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, as well as captains of industries, media personalities, and top-tier music executives. It marked a special moment as the Headies returned to Nigeria after a two-year hiatus abroad, underscoring the nation’s increasing role in the global music scene.
During her speech, Mrs. Benson-Awoyinka hailed Afrobeats as one of Nigeria’s most significant exports to the world, emphasizing Lagos’s pride in hosting the country’s biggest celebration of musical excellence.
The US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills Jr, echoed this sentiment, spotlighting the global rise of Afrobeats, especially in the United States, where Nigerian stars have made significant strides, selling out prestigious venues across the country, winning awards and took a moment to congratulate Tems on her Grammy win. Mills also remarked that the cultural ties between Nigeria and United States has gone tremendously and declared the US a proud supporter of Afrobeats.
The theme for this year’s Headies, “Back to Base,” emphasizes a return to the roots of Nigerian music while rewarding outstanding achievements in the industry. Mr. Ayo Animashahun, the Executive Producer of the Headies, assured guests that the 17th edition would be “bigger and better” than ever before, with a focus on recognizing the finest talent within Nigerian music.
Among the attendees were several nominees, including the renowned hip-hop artist Illbliss, who is nominated for Rap Album of the Year, and the rising star Taves. Additionally, singer Brown Joel delivered a thrilling performance alongside socialite-turned-musician Cubana Chief Priest, with their latest track, “More Money,” setting the tone for the upcoming award show.
With the event drawing closer, all eyes are on the 17th edition of the Headies, poised to be a memorable evening that celebrates the best in Nigerian music, its global reach, and its ever-growing influence on the world stage.
