The government of Tanzania is intensifying efforts to ensure that Singeli music, a fast-paced and energetic genre, is recognized on the global stage as a symbol of the country’s musical identity. Minister for Information, Culture, Arts, and Sports, Palamagamba Kabudi, has been at the forefront of advocating for Singeli’s international recognition, drawing comparisons to how Reggae represents Jamaica and Amapiano represents South Africa.

Speaking during a visit to the National Arts Council (BASATA) in Dar es Salaam, Kabudi stressed that Singeli’s unique sound and cultural significance must be preserved and promoted globally. The genre, which has become popular in Tanzania’s urban centers, is a vibrant fusion of traditional Tanzanian sounds with contemporary influences, characterized by its high-energy beats and fast tempos.

Kabudi highlighted that for Singeli to become a global force, there needs to be a concerted effort to elevate its quality, production, and international exposure. He urged Tanzanian artists to work with BASATA to ensure their music is vetted and certified, ensuring that it meets international standards.

Furthermore, Kabudi emphasized the importance of artists maintaining professionalism and adhering to ethical values in their work. He believes that Singeli, with its rich cultural roots, has the potential to influence not only the Tanzanian music scene but also the broader global music landscape.

As part of these efforts, Kabudi also recognized BASATA’s strides in adopting technological platforms such as AMIS and TAUSI to streamline the management and promotion of Tanzanian music. These initiatives aim to support artists and increase transparency and efficiency within the creative industry.

With Tanzania’s government firmly behind Singeli’s global recognition, the genre’s rise on the world stage seems inevitable, with its unique rhythms and infectious energy capturing hearts beyond Tanzania’s borders.
