Ghanaian rap icon Sarkodie has been excluded from the ‘Artiste of the Year’ category at the 2025 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), ending a ten-year streak of consistent nominations.
Sarkodie, renowned for his lyrical prowess and significant contributions to the Ghanaian music industry, has been a mainstay at the TGMA ‘Artiste of the Year’ nominations since his breakthrough. His absence this year has sparked discussions among fans and industry observers. Some believe that while Sarkodie’s influence remains significant, the award should recognize artists with standout performances in the eligibility period. Others feel his omission is a misstep, given his enduring impact on the industry.
Sarkodie earned his first nomination at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) in 2010, with his debut album Makye’ earning him eight nominations and five awards, including the coveted Artiste of the Year and Discovery of the Year awards. In 2012, Sarkodie continued his success with his Rapperholic album, securing 12 nominations and winning three awards, including ‘Artiste of the Year and Most Popular Song of the Year’ for U Go kill Me.
Although he missed out on the Artiste of the Year nomination in 2013. Sarkode began an impressive streak starting in 2014, with his Sarkology album earning eight nominations. Since then, he has consistently been a major contender, especially in the Artist year of the year category. However, the impressive run came too an end this year.
Despite missing out on the Artiste of the year Nomination, the rapper still earned three major nominations including Best Rap Performance, Best Hiphop Song and Best Hiplife/Hiphop Artiste.
Sarkodie’s absence from the TGMA ‘Artiste of the Year’ nomination is a testament to the dynamic nature of the music industry, where emerging talents continually reshape the landscape. Regardless of awards, Sarkodie’s legacy and influence in Ghanaian music remain indisputable.
