In a groundbreaking move, Japan’s National Museum of Nature and Science has added the PlayStation 2 (PS2) to its prestigious Future Technology Heritage registry. This marks the first time a gaming console has been recognized for its cultural and technological impact, earning a spot among 381 other iconic innovations.

The PS2, launched over two decades ago, is credited with revolutionizing home entertainment by being the first console to include a DVD player at a lower price point than standalone players at the time. Its ability to produce groundbreaking graphics and provide a multifunctional entertainment experience helped cement its status as a cultural icon. The PS2 remains the best-selling console of all time, with over 150 million units sold, a record that still holds strong in 2024.

The registry’s recognition of the PS2 showcases its enduring influence on both gaming and media consumption, demonstrating how one piece of technology helped shape entertainment in millions of homes worldwide. Despite the modern success of the PlayStation 5, the PS2’s legacy continues to loom large, with its mix of innovation and affordability making it a beloved part of gaming history.

This inclusion highlights Japan’s appreciation of the technological advances that have significantly shaped modern life, with the PS2 standing out as a significant step in gaming’s evolution.
