Elon Musk’s internet company, Starlink, is making significant strides in Nigeria, with plans to establish ground stations across the country in a strategic effort to enhance connectivity. According to insider sources, Starlink has acquired approximately 29,000 acres of land in three key locations: Okun Ajah in Lagos State, Sagamu in Ogun State, and Port Harcourt in Rivers State.
Partnering with Equinix, a leader in data center solutions, Starlink is building these ground stations to improve the efficiency of its satellite internet service. Construction has already begun in Okun Ajah, with completion expected by Q4 2024, while other sites are projected to be operational by 2025.
Starlink’s ground stations, crucial for transmitting data between satellites and the internet backbone, are part of its broader strategy to provide faster and more reliable internet services in Nigeria. By bypassing international data centers, these ground stations are expected to reduce latency and improve overall internet performance, potentially setting a new standard for connectivity in the country.
Starlink entered the Nigerian market in 2022 after acquiring an ISP license from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), along with a Sales and Installation license and an International Gateway license. These licenses allow Starlink to operate facilities for transmitting international telecommunications services in and out of Nigeria.
Despite its higher costs compared to local ISPs, Starlink has quickly become a major player in Nigeria’s internet service market, ranking as the third-largest ISP by Q1 2024. Its rapid growth, driven by its ubiquitous satellite service, has attracted a significant number of customers, even in areas with poor internet networks. With the establishment of ground stations, Starlink is poised to challenge the dominance of established players like MTN and redefine the Nigerian telecom landscape.
