Apple’s most anticipated event of the year, the It’s Glowtime event, is set to take place tomorrow, September 9, at 1 PM ET in Cupertino, CA. Streamable live on YouTube or Apple’s website, the tech world will be watching as Apple unveils its latest hardware and software, including the much-rumored iPhone 16 lineup.
Apple is expected to announce four new iPhone models: the iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, and 16 Pro Max. While this year’s update seems to bring mostly iterative improvements, the Pro models may feature slightly larger screens — 6.3 inches for the iPhone 16 Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. There’s also buzz about new colors, including a return of rose gold and a “gold-colored titanium” shade for the Pro models.
While the design may not be radically different, the iPhone 16 series will get a bump in power thanks to the A18 chipset, optimized for Apple’s next big push into AI, branded as Apple Intelligence. The Pro models will pack more RAM and more powerful chips compared to the standard versions, enhancing performance for AI-powered features.
One standout feature likely to carry over from last year’s Pro models to the standard iPhone 16 and 16 Plus is the Action Button. This versatile replacement for the mute switch can be customized to perform tasks like launching the camera or turning on the flashlight.
iPhone photography enthusiasts may be in for a treat. The Pro and Pro Max models are expected to feature a dedicated camera button for autofocus and zoom control, creating a DSLR-like experience. There’s also talk of a vertical camera layout for the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, marking a shift from the current square module design.
Though details on the new camera features are scarce, expect Apple to push further into professional-grade mobile photography, particularly in the Pro models.
On the software side, iOS 18 will introduce exciting new features like a customizable Control Center, Home Screen upgrades, and the long-awaited RCS support. However, the full AI-powered Apple Intelligence feature is delayed until iOS 18.1, which is expected to arrive in October.
Apple isn’t just showcasing iPhones — the Apple Watch is set to receive major updates. As Apple celebrates the tenth anniversary of its smartwatch, rumors suggest the next entry will be called the Apple Watch Series 10 (or possibly Series X). Expect larger screens and new designs, including a 49mm model to replace the smaller 41mm version.
The redesign might also come with a new band system that features more convenient connectors, but it could render old bands incompatible. As for the ultra-rugged Apple Watch Ultra 3, it’s not expected to undergo a major overhaul but will receive performance tweaks.
Fans of Apple’s audio lineup should also keep an ear out. Apple is reportedly gearing up to introduce two new AirPod models to replace the aging AirPods 2 and AirPods 3. The big shift? USB-C charging for both. Higher-end models will also likely include wireless charging and noise cancellation, edging closer to the performance of the AirPods Pro.
Meanwhile, those hoping for an AirPods Max update or a refresh of the Mac mini and iPad mini may have to wait until later this year or even 2025.
While the iPhone 16 lineup will take center stage, Apple’s It’s Glowtime event will feature a range of new devices, software updates, and maybe even a few surprise announcements. Tune in tomorrow to find out if the rumors live up to the hype.
