Today, on November 19th, the world comes together to observe International Men’s Day, a day dedicated to highlighting the vital contributions men make to society. The theme for 2024, “Positive Role Models,” invites us to reflect on the men who inspire us through their actions, leadership, and integrity.
While International Men’s Day has historically focused on raising awareness about men’s health, mental well-being, and gender equality, this year’s emphasis on positive role models offers a unique opportunity to shift the conversation. It calls on us to recognize and uplift men who demonstrate kindness, responsibility, and resilience, setting examples for future generations to follow.
But what exactly makes someone a “positive role model,” and why is it so important in today’s world?
International Men’s Day (IMD) was founded in 1992 by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh, a historian from Trinidad and Tobago. The date, November 19th, was chosen to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Teelucksingh’s father and to highlight the positive contributions that men make to society. Since then, IMD has grown in significance, with celebrations now taking place in over 80 countries worldwide.
While International Men’s Day serves multiple purposes—addressing issues like men’s health, mental well-being, and the importance of fathers—this year’s focus on positive role models highlights the impact that individual men have on shaping communities, businesses, and families. From community leaders to global icons, the emphasis is on men who influence others in constructive and meaningful ways.
In a world where societal expectations often push men to be stoic, strong, and unemotional, it’s easy to overlook the importance of vulnerability, empathy, and emotional intelligence in shaping positive masculinity. This year’s theme challenges us to reflect on the qualities of positive male role models and how these traits can help break down harmful stereotypes of masculinity.
Traditional views of masculinity often emphasize toughness, dominance, and the suppression of emotion, which can lead to mental health issues, strained relationships, and unrealistic expectations. Positive role models show that masculinity is multifaceted and can include emotional openness, kindness, and a commitment to equality.
From fathers raising their children with respect and empathy to public figures who use their platforms to advocate for social causes, positive male role models demonstrate that leadership doesn’t have to come at the expense of compassion. This type of leadership inspires others to take responsibility for their actions, support their communities, and create positive change.
Many men still face stigma around discussing mental health. Positive male role models, especially those in the public eye, have the ability to normalize conversations about mental well-being. When men openly speak about their struggles, it reduces the stigma and encourages others to seek help when needed.
The theme of “Positive Role Models” isn’t just a call to recognize global icons—it also encourages us to appreciate the everyday heroes in our lives. Here are a few categories of men who often serve as role models, inspiring change in their communities and beyond:
Father figures, uncles, and mentors play a crucial role in shaping the next generation. Whether it’s through teaching important life skills, providing emotional support, or simply offering guidance, these men often lead by example. Their ability to nurture, protect, and educate is something that should be celebrated.
In the public realm, positive male role models include activists, educators, and leaders who speak out for justice and equality. Men like Malala’s father, Ziauddin Yousafzai, who advocates for girls’ education, or Barack Obama, whose messages of unity, hope, and social justice continue to resonate globally, are perfect examples. These men use their influence to create a ripple effect that encourages others to act with integrity and compassion.
In local communities, positive role models can be anyone who leads by example, regardless of their background. These could be teachers who go the extra mile for their students, healthcare workers who dedicate their time to helping others, or volunteers who selflessly give to causes they care about. These men show that heroism is often found in the small, everyday actions.
International Men’s Day isn’t just about honoring men; it’s about fostering conversations that encourage healthy, respectful, and inclusive attitudes toward masculinity. Here are a few ways we can celebrate:
Take to social media or blogs to share the stories of men who inspire you. This could be a local mentor, a public figure, or a family member whose actions have left a lasting impact on you.
Encourage conversations around men’s mental health and support organizations that work to break the stigma around emotional well-being. Mental health is one of the most critical issues men face today, and by promoting open dialogue, we can create an environment where men feel comfortable seeking help.
Celebrate men who defy traditional stereotypes—men who are caregivers, who lead with compassion, or who prioritize equality in their homes and workplaces. By expanding our definition of what it means to be a “man,” we contribute to breaking down harmful societal expectations.
International Men’s Day 2024 presents an opportunity to reflect on the positive contributions of men in all walks of life. As we celebrate the positive role models around us—whether global icons or everyday heroes—we are reminded of the profound impact these individuals can have on shaping a more inclusive, compassionate world. By continuing to amplify the voices of men who exemplify kindness, resilience, and emotional intelligence, we can inspire future generations to embrace the true strength found in positivity and empathy.
This International Men’s Day, let’s not just celebrate the positive role models we already know; let’s commit to becoming role models ourselves and making a positive difference in the lives of others.
