Veteran Nigerian rapper Eedris Abdulkareem’s latest single, “Tell Your Papa,” has become a focal point of national discourse, achieving remarkable digital success despite a broadcast ban imposed by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).
“Tell Your Papa” serves as a direct response to remarks by Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, who lauded his father as Nigeria’s greatest leader. In the song, Abdulkareem critiques the current administration’s policies, particularly the removal of fuel subsidies, which he argues have led to widespread economic hardship. The track also highlights perceived unfulfilled promises, urging Seyi to convey these concerns to his father.
However, on April 9, 2025, the NBC issued a directive labeling “Tell Your Papa” as “Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB),” citing violations of Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, which prohibits content deemed “inappropriate for broadcast.”
Reacting to the ban, Eedris Abdulkareem drew parallels to the 2004 censorship of his song “Jaga Jaga,” stating that in Nigeria, truth and constructive criticism are often criminalized. He also clarified that the song was not intended as a personal attack on Seyi Tinubu but as a response to his public praise of his father, emphasizing that the track aims to encourage addressing Nigeria’s pressing issues, including security and economic challenges.
The ban appears to have inadvertently fueled the song’s popularity. “Tell Your Papa” has amassed over 89,000 views and 2,800 likes on YouTube, a significant increase from its initial 22,754 views post-release. On Spotify, the track has surpassed 30,000 streams, reflecting widespread support across digital platforms.
“Tell Your Papa” exemplifies the complex interplay between artistic expression and governmental regulation in Nigeria. While the NBC’s ban sought to suppress dissenting opinions, it has instead amplified the song’s reach, sparking conversations about free speech, governmental accountability, and the power of digital media in contemporary activism.
