Ghanaian highlife musician Dada Kwaku Duah, known in the music industry as Dada KD, has openly criticized the state of Ghana’s music industry, highlighting the severe financial hardships faced by artists. He asserts that Ghanaian musicians are among the most miserable globally, attributing this to the industry’s failure to provide adequate royalties and support. Dada KD’s candid remarks shed light on the systemic issues plaguing the sector.

Dada KD revealed that despite having 16 albums, he receives a mere GHS 1,000 every six months in royalties. This translates to approximately GHS 2,000 annually, a sum he deems insufficient for sustaining a career in music. He expressed frustration over the lack of a proper logging system to track music plays and ensure fair compensation for artists. The current biannual payment system further exacerbates the financial challenges faced by musicians.

He has been vocal about the shortcomings of key industry organizations such as the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) and the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO). He claims that these bodies have failed to effectively manage and distribute royalties, leaving artists without the financial support they deserve. In a bold statement, he suggested that if given the opportunity, he could run GHAMRO more efficiently, ensuring that musicians receive monthly payments for their work.

The lack of financial support and recognition has taken a toll on the mental health of many Ghanaian musicians. Dada KD admitted to experiencing bouts of depression, attributing these feelings to the industry’s neglect and the public’s lack of appreciation for artists’ contributions. He shared personal struggles, including thoughts of suicide, stemming from the continuous challenges faced in the music scene.

The Fatia Fata Nkrumah crooner advocates for a complete overhaul of the current structures governing the music industry. He emphasizes the need for transparency, accountability, and a system that ensures fair compensation for artists. By reforming organizations like GHAMRO and establishing a more artist-friendly framework, he believes the industry can thrive and provide sustainable livelihoods for musicians.

Dada KD’s revelations serve as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by Ghanaian musicians. His call for reform underscores the urgent need for systemic changes to ensure that artists receive the recognition and financial support they deserve. As the music industry continues to evolve, it is imperative that these issues are addressed to foster a thriving and sustainable environment for Ghana’s musical talents.
