In a bizarre twist to an already troubled mission, Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, currently docked at the International Space Station (ISS), has started emitting strange sonar-like noises from one of its speakers. The unsettling sound was first noticed by astronaut Butch Wilmore, who quickly reported it to NASA’s mission control in Houston. This eerie occurrence adds another layer of complexity to Starliner’s mission, which has been plagued by issues since its launch in June.
Wilmore, who has been aboard the ISS for several months, was supposed to return to Earth via Starliner, but ongoing technical difficulties with the spacecraft’s systems have forced NASA to make alternative plans. The astronaut, along with colleague Suni Williams, will now wait for a ride home with SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission, leaving the Starliner to return to Earth without its crew.
The exact cause of the noise remains unknown, and Boeing’s engineers are investigating the issue. Speculation is rife as to what might be causing these sonar-like sounds, with some wondering if it could be related to the spacecraft’s thrusters, which have also experienced problems.
As Boeing and NASA continue to troubleshoot the issue, the space community is left with more questions than answers. This latest hiccup only adds to Boeing’s string of challenges, as the aerospace giant struggles to keep up with its rivals in the increasingly competitive space race.
