Nigerian rapper Illbliss, known for his influential role in the hip-hop scene, has shared an intriguing encounter that shaped his musical journey. During an appearance on The Real Shareholders podcast, Illbliss recounted how a marketer advised him to collaborate with the eccentric Afrobeats artist Terry G to boost his career.
The marketer believed that Terry G’s unique style and popularity could significantly boost Illbliss career. Taking the advice to heart, Illbliss reached out to Terry G, and both collaborated on the hit single ‘Aye Po Gan’ which became a massive hit and brought Illbliss mainstream success.
Terry G, often referred to as the “Akpako Master,” is renowned for his energetic performances and distinctive blend of dancehall and Afrobeats. His contributions to the Nigerian music industry have been significant, with hits like “Akpako Master” and “Run Mad” dominating the airwaves in the late 2000s.
Illbliss went on the recount how he to the famous Alaba Market after recording his first album ‘Dat Ibo Boy’ in 2009 to look for a marketer for the album. He shared that he approached the famous Obaino, who was marketing the songs of many of Nigeria’s biggest stars. The rapper shared how Obaino acknowledged the quality of his rap but dismissed it for its lack of commercial appeal.
Despite this, Illbliss didn’t back down, he again approached Abu Ventures, one of the biggest marketers, who told him that he wasn’t looking to make any new investments. He added that he called his late friend B Elect, who told him to go to a marketer named Iyke D Don. This marketer told him to go work with Terry G.
Since then, Illbliss has gone on to become one of Nigeria’s most respected rappers. He is an instrumental figure in the commercialisation of Igbo rap music.
Illbliss would also play a pivotal role in the careers of many artists, including Phyno and Chidinma.
