Nigerian rapper and activist Falz has opened up on the struggles of online fame, revealing the intense internal tug-of-war between restraint and responding to vicious online trolls. He credited his restraint to maturity, discipline, and a solid support system.
Appearing as a guest on the recent episode of the Dear Ife podcast series, he spoke on his activism, new music, love life and overall life in the spotlight. He shared that while he is often tempted to respond to online criticism, he consciously chooses to hold back to preserve his peace and focus on his mission.
“It’s annoying and I’m not going to lie. A lot of moments I see comments people make here and there and I wonder, ‘Are you stupid? Or daft?’ But what can I do? I also have to do a lot of holding back. I have to hold myself back a lot!”
Falz, known for his outspoken stance on social issues and governance, has faced significant online backlash, especially during politically charged periods. Despite the pressure, he remains committed to using his platform for positive change, emphasizing that his activism is driven by compassion rather than a desire for confrontation.
This revelation sheds light on the personal toll of public life and the importance of mental resilience in the face of online negativity. Falz’s decision to prioritize his well-being over engaging with detractors serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by public figures and the need for support and understanding from the public.
