In a recent tell-all interview with Echo Room, indigenous rapper CDQ opened up about a major career crossroads one that involved none other than Afrobeats superstar Davido.
According to CDQ, Davido once reached out via X (formerly Twitter), expressing a bold desire to invest heavily in CDQ’s career and turn him into “the biggest rapper in Africa.”
Rather than jump on the opportunity immediately, CDQ and his producer-partner Masterkraft arranged a meeting with Davido to discuss the terms. According to CDQ, the conversation was respectful and enthusiastic, but honest.
“We told him CDQ was a proper street artist who didn’t quite fit into the mainstream configuration of DMW Records.”
This honest assessment led to a shift in the conversation, from a standard label deal to a partnership proposal. However, the collaboration fell through as they couldn’t fully align on the long-term vision.
Despite the breakdown in formal partnership talks, the mutual respect between CDQ and Davido remained intact. They went on to collaborate musically multiple times, most notably on, Indomie (Remix)” “Ko Funny” and “Entertainer”.
His decision to remain independent and true to his street roots speaks volumes about artistic integrity in Nigeria’s music industry. Known for rapping fluently in Yoruba and representing Lagos mainland culture, CDQ carved his niche as one of Nigeria’s leading indigenous rappers.
CDQ continues to build his brand under his self-owned imprint NSNS (No Struggle No Success), releasing street-inspired music that resonates with grassroots fans across Nigeria. His steady output and fierce loyalty to his identity have kept him relevant in a constantly evolving scene.
