Nigerian music veteran Paul Okoye, widely known as Rudeboy of the iconic duo P-Square, has addressed a growing trend among emerging artists. In a candid Instagram story shared, he expressed his disapproval of the prevalent habit of smoking marijuana during music video shoots, particularly when the act appears to be done excessively and even before the music starts.

Paul’s message was clear, smoking is neither “swag” nor a stylish addition to a music video. He questioned the necessity of lighting up before the music even begins, highlighting that such actions may convey the wrong message to fans and the public. He further pointed out that many of these artists prioritize spending on substances like marijuana over essential needs, such as nutritious meals. He advised them to focus on their health and well-being, suggesting that they should “at least eat well” if they choose to indulge in smoking.

This isn’t the first time Paul Okoye has addressed the behavior of upcoming artists. In August 2024, he outlined stringent criteria for signing new artists to his record label, Fire Department Inc. Among these conditions were requirements for the artists to provide landed property and have their parents co-sign a binding contract. Moreover, any artist caught smoking would face a fine of N10 million.

Paul’s recent statements reflect a broader concern about the image and health of artists in the industry. By emphasizing the importance of responsibility and self-care, he aims to set a positive example for the next generation of musicians. His call to action encourages artists to prioritize their health and career longevity over fleeting trends that may harm their image and well-being.

As the Nigerian music scene continues to evolve, figures like Paul Okoye play a crucial role in shaping the values and standards upheld by emerging artists. His advocacy for a healthier and more responsible approach to artistry serves as a reminder that true “swag” comes from confidence, talent, and self-respect, not from harmful habits.
