Nearly three decades after his passing, Fela Kuti’s influence continues to resonate worldwide. His 1976 album ‘Zombie’ has been inducted into the 2025 Grammy Hall of Fame.
The Recording Academy announced the honor earlier this week, acknowledging the album’s enduring impact and its “lasting qualitative or historical significance” in music history. The Grammy Hall Of Fame was established by the Recording Academy in 1973 to honour recordings of lasting qualitative or historical significance that are at least 25 years old.
Released during Nigeria’s military regime, Zombie is a scathing critique of the Nigerian military’s blind obedience and brutality. The title track, “Zombie,” likens soldiers to mindless zombies, highlighting the dangers of unquestioning loyalty to authority. The album’s release led to severe repercussions for Fela Kuti, including a violent raid on his commune, the Kalakuta Republic, by the military in 1977. His mother, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, was thrown from a window during the attack, resulting in fatal injuries. Despite these challenges, Fela’s commitment to using music as a tool for social change remained unwavering.
The honor was received on behalf of the Kuti family by Fela’s eldest son, Femi Kuti, a renowned musician in his own right. Expressing pride in his father’s legacy, Femi stated, “Our father’s legacy lives on. We are honored to accept this Grammy Hall of Fame award on behalf of Fela Anikulapo Kuti. His music continues to inspire and unite people across the world.”
This induction not only celebrates Fela Kuti’s artistic genius but also underscores the power of music as a medium for social commentary and change. Zombie remains a testament to the enduring relevance of Fela Kuti’s message and his indelible mark on the global music landscape.
