Ghanaian music sensation King Promise has called for unity among local artists, emphasizing that collective collaboration is key to propelling the nation’s music industry onto the global stage. In a recent interview, he expressed concerns about the prevalent mentality among some artists who view each other as competitors rather than collaborators. This mindset, he believes, hinders the growth and international recognition of Ghanaian music.
King Promise recounted an incident in London where, despite being invited by fellow artist Sarkodie to attend a show, he was denied the opportunity to perform. This experience underscored for him the need for a shift in perspective among Ghanaian artists. “It’s just the mentality of Ghanaians. Like I always say, it is not us against each other; it is us against the world,” King Promise remarked.
Drawing comparisons with Nigerian artists, King Promise pointed out that artists like Wizkid and Omah Lay have consistently embraced collaboration, often sharing the stage with him during joint performances. This spirit of camaraderie, he suggests, contributes to the international success of Nigerian music .
Beyond his advocacy for unity, King Promise has achieved significant milestones in his career. In December 2024, he became the first Ghanaian male artist to surpass 400 million streams on Spotify, solidifying his position as a leading figure in the Afrobeats and Highlife genres .
His latest album, True to Self, released in June 2024, features collaborations with artists like Shallipopi, Fave, and Sarkodie. The album blends Highlife and Afrobeats, reflecting his musical versatility and commitment to showcasing Ghanaian talent .
King Promise’s message is clear: for Ghanaian music to achieve global recognition, artists must prioritize collaboration over competition. By supporting one another and working together, they can amplify their collective impact and ensure that the world hears Ghana’s unique musical voice.
