Nigerian rapper Erigga has named Phyno as the greatest Nigerian rapper of all time.
In a recent interview with Echoo Room, Erigga didn’t hold back in his admiration for the Eastern rap powerhouse. The conversation, which also touched on their recent collaboration “Up Iweka”, revealed a deep sense of respect and long-standing mutual interest between the two artists.
Erigga’s acknowledgment of Phyno underscores the latter’s enduring influence and the respect he commands within the industry. This recognition is particularly significant given Erigga’s own contributions to Nigerian rap, known for his raw and authentic storytelling that resonates with many fans.
“I have always wanted to do a song with Phyno,” Erigga shared. “We have always had that conversation. Whenever I told him of my intention, he would always say it was left to me.”
Erigga explained that he is selective about collaborations, preferring organic connections and aligned creative energy over superficial partnerships. That made working with Phyno particularly meaningful.
The cornerstone of Erigga’s praise lies in Phyno’s ability to evolve with the times. From his early days dominating the Igbo rap scene to becoming a national force with chart-topping hits like “Fada Fada”, “Connect”, and “High Way”, Phyno has remained a relevant and respected figure for over a decade.
Phyno, born Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, is known for rapping predominantly in Igbo and blending indigenous elements with contemporary sounds. Since releasing his critically acclaimed debut album No Guts No Glory in 2014, he has been instrumental in pushing indigenous rap into the mainstream and has collaborated with nearly every top-tier Nigerian artist.
In recent years, debates over who truly deserves the “GOAT” title have intensified, with names like M.I Abaga, Olamide, Vector, and Reminisce frequently mentioned. However, Erigga’s declaration adds weight to Phyno’s claim, especially coming from a fellow artist who has himself built a reputation for lyrical authenticity and street wisdom.
