At the 2025 Headies Awards, a poignant moment unfolded as Wunmi, the widow of late Nigerian singer Mohbad, accepted the Best Street Hop Song award on his behalf. Joined by their two-year-old son, Liam, and other family members, Wunmi delivered an emotional tribute, stating,
“Even though Mohbad is no longer here with us, he lives in us.”
She emphasized that referring to her husband as “late” felt inadequate, expressing that he lives on, especially through their son. Wunmi believes that one day, Liam will understand the profound impact his father had on the world.
Since Mohbad’s untimely passing in September 2023, Wunmi has faced numerous challenges, including public scrutiny and legal disputes. A significant point of contention has been the paternity of Liam. Despite public pressure and legal proceedings, Wunmi has consistently denied conducting any secret DNA tests on her son. She maintains that the tests were unnecessary and has publicly called on Mohbad’s father to arrange for them, a request she claims was never fulfilled.
Further complicating matters, the singer’s burial has yet to occur, with Wunmi attributing the delays to ongoing family disputes, particularly with Mohbad’s father.
Through these trials, Wunmi remains steadfast in her commitment to preserving Mohbad’s legacy and ensuring their son grows up knowing the greatness of his father. Her resilience and dedication continue to inspire many as she navigates the complexities of grief, public life, and motherhood.
